Troop 1 - 100 years ago
This story appeared in the local newspaper 100 years ago and speaks to the leadership of the Trafford Boy Scout Troop and the young men involved in this group.
"Boy Scouts Enjoy Hike. About ten members of the Boy Scouts went on the hike out the brick road last Saturday afternoon and had a very pleasant afternoon under the direction of Assistant Scout Master Deitrich. They cooked their supper in the woods and returned late in the evening. The regular meeting of the scouts was held Tuesday evening, and it was decided to take a basket of eatables to the Henry family every day. The scouts will donate things themselves and also solicit donations to take to the family which is in destitute circumstances."
While we don’t know the situation of the Henry family mentioned in the article, we know that the Assistant Scout Master was Frank Deitrich (1891-1934), a moulder who once worked in the Westinghouse Foundry. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge 1146 in Trafford who made it a part of their creed to "visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan."
