Christmas card arrived from Dolly
In May 1957, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Marty Hayes, a dancer from Rankin, was surprised to receive a greeting card from dancer Dolly DeLane, who lived just a few miles away in Trafford. The surprise was that it was a Christmas card mailed by Dolly in 1954.
Dolly was quite the popular dance attraction at nightclubs across the region, billed as Pittsburgh’s Personality Girl - Sensational Dance Star - Lovely Dance Starlet - Novelty Dancing Sensation – Character Dancer - Dance Stylist – and The Radium Doll.
In February 1949, she was reported to have returned home to Trafford City after trouping over five states with variety shows, and in January 1950, the Post-Gazette reported the “dancing doll from Trafford City” was driving a new car.
Did you ever hear of Dolly DeLane from Trafford? Was this her stage name? UPDATE: Yes, Dolly was her stage name. Based on a Facebook response by George H. Schano, he identified Dolly as his grandmother's sister.
Dolly was Domenica Delia Boyd (1926-2019). More to follow.
